Nick and Brooke's Proposal

On Monday, we went to a jeweler to look at rings for him. Then they kicked me out of the office so they could discuss rings for me. When they came out the jeweler said it would be another couple weeks before my ring came. I am not going to lie, I was a little miffed. I had been waiting for a long time and he had told me it was going to be sooner than it now appeared. Little did I know, he was setting me up for his ultimate proposal.

Then came Saturday, the big surprise. He told me he was going to do something special to make up for the long wait on the proposal.

After taking a few lame tests Nick met me at a local Winterfest. While we were watching the skiing, I was taking some photos with his camera. He told me he had something I could take a picture of and pulled out a hideous ring straight from a nightmare I had a few weeks ago. It was a jimmy-rigged ring with my name in block letters. It was hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing. He told me it was to tide me over till the real deal came. Anyway we stayed a while longer then left to get ready to go to a mysterious place for dinner.

We started driving up the canyon and he made me close my eyes. I was able to mentally navigate myself up part of the way, but then got lost. A while later we parked. I opened my eyes and we were at a beautiful ski resort. We checked in the lobby and then went on a 15 minute gondola ride to the top of the mountain where another restaurant was. The ride was so beautiful…a layer of fresh snow covered the valley, etc. As we entered the restaurant we were amazed at the incredible atmosphere. The lodge was remarkable with a gigantic four-sided fireplace in the middle of the room. They sat us in a romantic little booth with a high arched back to provide some privacy. The food was a delicious gourmet buffet.

When we could eat no more, he said he needed to use the restroom and asked if I wanted to go too. I said yes and got up to take my coat and purse. He said I could just leave it and so I decided to leave it while he finished taking care of the check.

While I was in the bathroom, Nick was preparing for the deed. The maitre d' kindly provided a beautiful rose to enhance the moment. He anxiously waited for me by the fireplace as his heart practically pounded out of his chest. He asked the piano player to play a little softer so that I could hear him.

I came up the stairs and saw him waiting for me in front of the fireplace with the rose. He said, “Look what they gave me to give to you for Valentines,” (the rose). He then gave me a little pink bag and said something to the effect of, “Here is something to tide you over till the real ring comes.” I opened it and it was a necklace. I was hesitant to let him put it on me but when he was pretty persistent about taking off the necklace I was wearing and putting this one on, I consented. This was one of the fears Nick had that could potentially thwart his amazing plan. I turned around and Nick was so nervous. He was shaking so much it took him a while to get the little hook off. I, still clueless, thought it was just because his hands were so big and the hook was so small. Then it took longer to do up the even smaller hook on the new necklace. He was beginning to think that this unexpected nervous reaction was going to destroy hours of thought and planning. Luckily he was able to get it on; however, just before connecting the hook, he slipped the ring on the necklace. As I turned around, the necklace felt heavier than just a few little hearts. I looked down and sure enough, to my surprise, there was the ring. I was speechless and so surprised!

I looked up at Nick and he was right there smiling down at me. He knelt down on one knee, told me how much he loved me and asked me to marry him. I said yes.

Nick took me home and I had another surprise waiting. There were rose petals leading from the stairs up to my bedroom. Inside were five dozen roses strategically placed in my incredibly messy room. On my bed lay a single red rose and a delicious small platter with chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels.

It was the perfect way to end the perfect day!
